ATLANTA -- Georgia's Speaker of the House has been nominated for a second term, officials said.
Rep. Jon Burns (R-Newington) was nominated on Tuesday by his colleagues in the House Republican Caucus to serve his second legislative term as Speaker of the Georgia House for the 2025-2026 legislative session, according to a release. Burns represents District 159, which includes Screven County and portions of Bulloch and Effingham counties. He was elected to the House of Representatives back in 2004.

Burns said it has been an honor and privilege to serve as the state's 75th Speaker of the House and is grateful for the trust and support of his colleagues and friends.
"As we reflect on all that we've achieved together, I'm more confident than ever that our caucus will continue to deliver meaningful results -- whether it's passing historic tax cuts, investing in education, expanding access to healthcare or making our communities safer," Burns said. "I look forward to continued work ahead as we strive to grow and strengthen our Republican majority."
The Speaker of the House of Representatives serves as the presiding officer of the legislative body and its chief administrative leader, according to a release. The person is responsible for establishing the leadership and membership of House committees, presiding over floor sessions, enforcing House rules, assigning bills to committees and bringing matters to the House floor for debate.
Members of the House of Representatives choose the Speaker of the House on the first day of each biennial legislative session. The House will officially elect its Speaker during the start of the 2025-2026 legislative session on Monday, Jan. 13.
