Free: See San Antonio Philharmonic rehearse in its new home

The San Antonio Philharmonic is inviting the public to sit in on a rehearsal of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the Scottish Rite Cathedral.

The rehearsal, which also will include the San Antonio Mastersingers, starts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the historic building, 308 Avenue E. There is no admission charge, but those who plan to go must email [email protected] in advance to let the Philharmonic folks know they're coming.

The Philharmonic and the Mastersingers will perform the musical masterpiece at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Majestic Theatre, 224 E. Houston. Tickets range from $25 to $110 at majesticempire.com and the Majestic box office.

The Scottish Rite is the new home for the Philharmonic, which rose from the ashes of the San Antonio Symphony in 2022. The open rehearsal is the first time the Philharmonic has invited the public to listen to the musicians play there.

The musicians have forged a partnership with the San Antonio Scottish Rite Library and Museum, the nonprofit that owns the 100-year-old building. The classical music organization will operate and manage most of the spaces within the enormous building, and the Scottish Rite members will keep their offices and ceremonial rooms.

"This has got to be one of the finest buildings that most people have never seen because it's never really been open to the community," Philharmonic Executive Director Roberto Treviño said in an interview in October.

The plan is for the Philharmonic to perform concerts in the space, though that is likely years away. The building needs a lot of work before that can happen, including updating aging electrical and plumbing systems and adding ramps to make it accessible.
