Ahead of Charli XCX's Saturday Night Live hosting debut this weekend, the singer bantered with cast member Marcello Hernández in a new promo.
At one point in the video, Hernández wants to know where his outfit falls on the "brat" scale. "Hi, I'm Charli XCX and I'll be the host and musical guest this week on SNL," Charli initially says before Hernández asks, "Charli, do you like my outfit? Is it brat?"
"There's a thin line between brat and brong," she responds. Hernández adds, "Oh, what side am I on?"
"That's for the nation to decide," Charli says with a grin.
The promo references the "Brat Summer" phenomenon that took over the internet earlier this year following the release of the pop star's sixth studio album brat in June. As for what "brat" means, the singer previously explained in a TikTok clip, "You're just like that girl who is a little messy and likes to party and maybe says some dumb things sometimes. Who feels like herself but maybe also has a breakdown. But kind of, like, parties through it, is very honest, very blunt. A little bit volatile. Like, does dumb things. But it's brat. You're brat. That's brat."
This also wasn't the first time SNL has mentioned the "brat" phenomenon. Earlier in the sketch comedy show's 50th season, cast member Bowen Yang cosplayed the "360" singer for a sketch featuring a fake talk show called The Talk Talk Show with Charli XCX.
Following the show, Charli praised Yang's impression of her, telling Howard Stern on his SiriusXM channel, "I love Bowen, and I honestly think he did a great job. I was very impressed with the hair texture, actually. I thought it was a really good wig. It was good. It was cool."
Though it will be Charli's first time hosting SNL, she was previously the musical guest in 2014 and 2022.
