Where to get free Thanksgiving meals, volunteer in Denver in 2024

Denverites in need of a warm, free Thanksgiving meal or who want to volunteer to spread holiday cheer can check out the following opportunities around town.

When: 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25

Where: Assumption of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 4610 E. Alameda Ave., Denver

Details: The African Community Center is hosting its 19th annual Refugee First Thanksgiving. The meal is free, but tickets are required for this year's event, which welcomes Denver's newest refugee and immigrant community members. There will be international music, kids activities and cultural performances in addition to food.

Details: If you already arranged a voucher, you'll be assigned a pick-up time between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. to go through the drive-thru process. Registration for vouchers is already full, but if you missed the chance to snag one, you can arrive between 12 and 1 p.m. for first-come, first-served access to the Thanksgiving boxes. Each box contains a frozen turkey and Thanksgiving meal fixings for a family of 8 to 10.

Details: Fill out a form linked on Brother Jeff's website for access to a Thanksgiving meal. People who can't leave their homes due to illness, mobility restrictions or lack of transportation can request delivery.

Volunteer information: People can also fill out their information via the website form if they'd like to volunteer. The deadline to sign up as a volunteer is Nov. 22.

Details: Ms. Betty's is hosting its sixth Thanksgiving meal giveaway. Last year, local chefs Danielle and Tajahi Cooke and their crew served 13,036 meals. This year, the organization plans to serve 17,000 warm meals across metro Denver and beyond, including Boulder.

Volunteer information: People can donate to the cause through the organization's GoFundMe page. The organization is also looking for people to help prep, cook and deliver meals to people who need them on Thanksgiving Day. Volunteers can sign up on a form on Ms. Betty's website.

Details: While supplies last, each household will receive a Thanksgiving food box. The event will also offer no-cost dental screenings, flu shots, mental health resources, veteran services, housing and food assistance.
