Kennesaw State firing Owls head football coach Brian Bohannon wasn't popular among the sport's top pundits. Several took to social media to voice their skepticism around KSU's motives in making such a drastic move three weeks before the end of the season and with a man who built the program from the ground up being shown the door.
"Ooooooh this is the type of decision which makes me angry about a team I have no attachment to," Rodger Sherman prefaced before saying, "A guy builds your program from scratch, wins championships etc, then you move up a level and fire him for having exactly the record teams generally have when moving up a level!????"
"I don't really see what the hiring pool will be for this job. Good luck," CBS Sports' Shehan Jeyarajah.
Bohannon took to Twitter to confirm that he hadn't stepped down from his position and was indeed handed his pink slip from Kennesaw State.
"This morning I was informed directly from AD Overton that he was making a change in leadership. Contrary to what's been reported, I want to be clear that I did not step down from my position as head football coach at Kennesaw State University," Bohannon tweeted.
"Since we started the football program, I have had the pleasure of coaching and working alongside so many great people. I appreciate your hard work and dedication to this program."
Bohannon was 72-38 at KSU and led the Owls to three Big South Conference championships and four FCS playoff appearances. He's all Kennesaw State knew when it came to football. He led the Owls into a new era in the FBS in 2024.
And in one fell swoop he is gone. Replacing him is a task the university may not know where to start. Kennesaw State isn't a school that'll be in the hunt for top-flight coaching talent; especially after such an abrupt midseason exit that's inspiring more questions than answers.
