NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) -- For anyone who owes money to the Office of Motor Vehicles, a new law has been implemented aimed at reforming debt collection procedures.

OMV officials say through House Bill 683 passing, they will now offer flexible payment plans to accommodate residents based on their financial situation.

Fees already sent to collections have reportedly been recalled and reset to their original amounts. OMV officials say the law can bring relief to 350,000 residents with unpaid fines.

"This law reflects our commitment to fairness in governance. By reforming the OMV's reinstatement program, we are providing essential relief to our residents and getting more drivers back on the road and back to work," said Governor Jeff Landry.

Residents can contact the OMV to either pay those amounts or set up a payment plan.

By Dec. 31, all fees over 180 days past due and have not been resolved will be considered delinquent debt and may be referred back to ODR, according to OMV officials.

Drivers are advised to visit the Express Lane website to check the status of their license.

"The new law ensures that fees owed to OMV do not become an insurmountable obstacle and allows our agency to support drivers more effectively," said OMV Commissioner Dan Casey.

House Bill 683 was brought about by Representative Charles Owen, and reportedly received unanimous, bipartisan backing from the Louisiana Legislature.
