"My first assignment ever for Rolling Stone was on Nov. 11, 1987 -- 37 years ago this week. As that date approached, we heard a rumor that U2 was planning a free concert somewhere in downtown San Francisco, coinciding with their scheduled shows at the Oakland stadium. On the day of the concert, I heard the announcement on local radio station KFOG, and as I was leaving my house to go cover it on my own, the house phone rang. It was Jodi Peckman from Rolling Stone, offering me my first assignment with the magazine to photograph the concert. During the show, Bono spray-painted 'Rock 'n' Roll -- Stops the Traffic' on a large public art sculpture next to the stage in San Francisco's Financial District. The photograph was published in the January 1988 issue of Rolling Stone. Over the next 30 years, I would go on to shoot around 300 more assignments for the magazine as a freelancer."
