Frenkie de Jong reported to the Dutch national team for the first time since June as the midfielder is set to play for the Netherlands in their Nations League matches against Hungary and Bosnia & Herzegovina, even though he suffered a bit of an injury scare in Barcelona's defeat to Real Sociedad last Sunday.
The Barça captain came off at halftime after getting kicked in the shin during the first half, and there were immediate concerns about his health given his long absence due to a series of ankle injuries. Ronald Koeman offered an update on De Jong's condition earlier this week, but now have confirmation from Frenkie himself that there's nothing to worry about.
Speaking to the national team social media upon arrival at the training facility, De Jong was asked about his health status and his form, and he sounded optimistic about the chances of playing for his country in this international window.
"Very happy, I'm looking forward to it. It's been a long time, playing for the Dutch national team. It's a great honour. I'm always happy to be here. I'm a bit sore, but I think it'll be fine.
"It was a lingering injury. I missed a lot of matches and the European Championship, which was difficult. Things are getting better now. I am growing back to where I need to be in terms of form and fitness. I think we have a good team, a good selection. Hopefully we can do great things."

International breaks are always a source of huge concern for club managers and fans, but this specific scenario might be a good thing for Barça. If Frenkie is 100% recovered from what was a simple knock to the shin, playing more minutes for his country will boost his form and fitness and could help him return to Barça in better shape for what will be a very busy end to 2024, with some key matches in La Liga and Europe that will require the entire squad to be at their very best.
