State Health Commissioner discusses 'Our Healthy Kentucky Home' initiative

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - This past year, Kentucky ranked 41st for overall health. Leading in many health conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

"About 38 percent of Kentuckians are obese. 1 in 4 Kentuckians don't exercise outside of work whatsoever. 45 percent don't eat at least one fruit a day, and 20 percent don't eat at least one vegetable a day. 17 plus percent still smoke cigarettes of adults," said Kentucky Health Commissioner Dr. Steven Stack.

It's these unhealthy habits that the Our Healthy Kentucky Home campaign is hoping to change. Dr. Steven Stack said the goal is to eat 2 servings of fruits or vegetables a day, exercise at least 30 minutes, three times per week, and socialize and engage with others.

"I think you have to have a plan. So every Sunday as I get into this campaign myself, I'm going to start to sit down and plan ahead for the week. So I can go grocery shopping, and I can plan and put on my calendar when I'm going to do those exercise activities."

Dr. Stack said this initiative is done best, when done with others. He said real social connections are just as important for us as eating healthy and exercising.

"The Surgeon General in 2023 had a report about the United State's epidemic of isolation and loneliness. When we don't feel connected in a meaningful way to each other, we have anxiety, depression and stress. And all of those things degrade our health overall."
