Watchdog group grades central NC hospital chains from A to D

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade has evaluated numerous hospital groups across the country and provided consumers with a Fall 2024 report card.

Several Triangle-area hospitals are receiving kudos from a watchdog group that checks the effectiveness, safety and communication throughout major hospital chains.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade has evaluated numerous hospital groups across the country and provided consumers with a Fall 2024 report card.

Local Hospital groups receiving A grades include:

WakeMed Raleigh Campus and WakeMed Cary Hospital have received straight A grades seven times in a row. A WakeMed representative said less than 30% of hospitals nationally - and just 43 in North Carolina - received "A" grades on the Fall 2024 scores.

Johnston Health's Smithfield and and Clayton locations received B grades. University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill and Rex Hospital, Inc. on Lake Bone Trail in Raleigh also got Bs.

Cape Fear Valley Medical Center on Owen Drive in Fayetteville got a C with average and below-average marks for "communication with nurses" and "responsiveness of hospital staff."

Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford and Granville Medical Center in Oxford each received Ds.

Leapfrog is a nonprofit group that advocates for transparency in health care.
