Charleston 250 is gearing up for this year's Revolutionary War Victory Day reenactment and commemoration in Charleston on Dec. 15 at Marion Square. This Patriotic, family-friendly event will kick-off Charleston's America 250th Anniversary 2025-2033 national commemoration period.
Victory Day (British named "Evacuation Day") is the first of a series of many city-wide upcoming events, exhibits, Patriot spotlights, memorials, and commemorations through 2033 that will showcase Charleston's starring role in the War for American Independence: "From First Protests to Final Victory". Co-sponsored by the historic Washington Light Infantry (WLI), the distinguished speaker lineup is MG Willam Grimsley (USA retired), Chair of SC250, State DAR Regent Alice Caskey and Dr. Steven Smith, a renowned author and archeologist. Pre-event entertainment commences at noon with the Colonial Carolers singing period Christas Season music. The 1 p.m. step-off will feature the 2nd South Continentals, the British 33rd Regiment of Foot, and the Kingsbury Artillery. Attendees are welcome to join in the short parade.
The Victory Day event will be held at Marion Square's East Triangle adjacent to Meeting Street. There will be a covered stage for speakers and lawn chairs for about 90. In the event of inclement weather, the program will move indoors to the Hilton Embassy Suites adjacent to Marion Square, the "Old Citadel". We will have Revolutionary Charleston Ambassadors on site to provide directions and assistance. Attendees are encouraged to arrive before 12:30 p.m. Three-corner hats and period clothing are welcome and encouraged. The program concludes about 3 p.m. with a display of muskets and cannon.
Garage parking is available across King Street next to the Francis Marion Hotel or at the John Street garage or at the Charleston Visitors Center on Meeting Street. The Commander of the WLI, will be the emcee and he will speak about the revered "Eutaw Flag", still in their possession, and the RevWar veterans who founded the WLI. Dr. Smith is expected to speak about his new book regarding Fort Motte and Watson discoveries. Erick Nason, Commander of the 2nd Regiment, South Continental Line will speak from the field as General William Moultrie after the short parade and posting of the colors. There will be a laying of the wreath ceremony to honor our first fallen Patriots and those who fought for the precious sovereign independence we enjoy today. Speakers and reenactors will be available to the public following the program.
We have been informed that the Hornwork Augmented Reality Viewer (HARV), developed by the American Battlefield Trust in cooperation with the WLI and Dr. Nic Butler, will be operational and available to the public to view the Revolutionary War Hornwork Fortification as it appeared during the war years. This massive, medieval-looking fortification guarded the entrance way into Charlestown during the 31-month British occupation. Visitors will be able to time-travel back to see living history.
