Fan Developing "Astro Bot X Nintendo World" in Unity3D and There's Already Gameplay Available

Key Takeaways

HotzTendo's "Astro Bot X Nintendo World" is a fan-made project built on Unity3D, showcasing a crossover between Sony's Astro Bot and Nintendo. The project features gameplay footage of Astro Bot in unfamiliar territory, Nintendo's world, including a dinosaur battle. The developer has shared details about the development process, including testing on a PS5, and no plans for a public release yet.

While Team Asobi's Astro Bot has quite a few character cameos from other games, it's limited to games that appeared on PlayStation platforms, which is perfectly understandable. Well, one fan has decided to create their own Astro Bot game, and this one sees Sony's character in unfamiliar territory: Nintendo's world.

Self-proclaimed developerand hacker HotzTendo has posted gameplay footage and details of their project, Astro Bot X Nintendo World, which sees Astro Bot crossover with Nintendo.

Astro Bot X Nintendo World Is a Fan Made Project Built on Unity3D

HotzTendo has posted multiple video clips of the project being built on Unity3D. Check out what they plan to be the opening stage, and even a boss fight.

The next clip features a dinosaur battle, with a familiar star appearing at the end and even Mario's voice. I'm not 100% sure, but the dinosaur might be Bowser.

The platformers with the best launches since 2019 revealed, with some surprise entries.

As you can see from the tweets, the developer originally envisioned this as a side project, but after seeing interest, decided to pour more time into it.

A few things shared by HotzTendo about the development:

Unity splash removed (using a trick, they said) Custom intro video created in Adobe Premiere Final boss fight from Playroom implemented as a QTE with the "smash square button" created by a masked layered in Premiere Metal floor (texture) recreated in Photoshop It's a PS4 pkg file (filename extensions for packages of software and other files that can be installed on a device, filesystem), that the creator is using a PS5 to test it on. Once further into development, they plan to work with other devs to test it on a PS4. Astro Bot 3D model came from DeviantArt No public release, as it's still being worked on

For those planning on testing this out, note that it requires a lot of technical know-how regarding mods, and I presume a proper understanding of a jailbroken PS4/PS5.

These side-scrolling fantasies will make you fall in love through aesthetics.

I expect both Sony and Nintendo's lawyers to send their legal hounds after this to take it down -- regardless of whether it's a non-profit project or not. Video game companies are very, very protective of their IPs and usually aren't keen on letting modders and other people use them for their own projects.

While seeing Nintendo characters or levels appear in Astro Bot is next to impossible, Team Asobi's charming platformer does have a lot of cameos from other games and lesser-known properties. Check out the top 10 niche references in the game here to see what I mean.
