There has been a string of burglaries affecting several NFL players this season and it has caught the attention of the league office. Notable players such as Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, and former Minnesota Vikings and current Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Linval Joseph have all been hit.
The NFL is now stepping in and revealed that this may be part of a much bigger operation.
According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, who cited a league-issued memo obtained by NFL.com, "The NFL issued a security alert to team security directors and the players' union Wednesday about organized and skilled criminals that are increasingly targeting the homes of professional athletes."
The FBI is now involved and it is believed that a South American crime syndicate is responsible for the recent burglaries, per Pelissero. The NFL Players Association and team security groups are monitoring the situation.
"It's legit," a source told Pelissero. "It's a transnational crime ring, and over the last three weeks, they've focused on NBA and NFL players, and it's all over the country."
The Mahomes and Kelce burglaries happened within days of each other while the Chiefs were in New Orleans to face the Saints. No injuries occurred during either burglary and sources told Pelissero that the "perpetrators are nonconfrontational."
NFL security has given players recommendations to avoid getting targeted such as upping their home security and not posting real-time on social media.
