WALDORF, Md. -- At approximately 6:55 p.m. on November 21, 2024, emergency responders rushed to the scene of a severe motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Leonardtown Road and Old Washington Road. The crash left the driver and one passenger trapped inside the vehicle, prompting a swift response from fire and rescue crews.
First responders worked quickly to extricate the trapped individuals, whose injuries were deemed critical enough to warrant the pre-launch of a Maryland State Police helicopter. Once freed, the victims were handed over to emergency medical services for evaluation and transport.
Three male patients were treated at the scene. Maryland State Police Trooper 7 helicopter transported one critically injured patient to the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center, while another was taken to the same facility via ambulance. A third patient was transported to UM Charles Regional Medical Center for further care.
As the crash disrupted traffic in the area, Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) was called to address downed power lines resulting from the collision.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
This incident unfolded just an hour after another serious crash in White Plains, where a driver was airlifted to a trauma center.
Further details will be provided as they become available.
